“..no such thing as chance, and that every act and every expression has its own meaning, determined by the inner feelings and wishes of the individual.”

― C.G. Jung, Psychology of the Unconscious

When it comes to Astral Projection it is easy to get lost in techniques. There’s a myriad of them, each with their slight twist to make them unique from the others. Whether you are employing techniques that require you to perform affirmations, scripting, any type of ritual before your session, specific diets or lifestyle changes, reality checks throughout the day, meditation, or actions around your sleep cycle, there is an endless list to choose from. Our technique is no different, we’re still adapting information that has been around essentially for 100 years, only we’re applying our experience to give you the best chances at being successful. Regardless of technique though, upon closer examination there is a common thread throughout all techniques, the entertainment of your subconscious.

Your Subtle Power in Reality

While the Dr Jung quote was referring to what psychoanalysts refer to as the “unconscious” and the influence of your own actions upon your life stemming from memories and thoughts beneath the surface, it still applies to what we’ll be going over when it comes to your subconscious affecting your conscious reality.

You may have heard of the term “manifesting”? Several authors on consciousness have theorized that our subconscious will can have an effect on our future reality, authors like Neville Goddard and Joeseph Murphy to name a couple. The books “Feeling is the Secret” and “The Power of the Subconscious Mind” by these authors are both very good books on the subject if you have an interest in it.

By applying a line of thought that your desires have already come to fruition, or by affirmations or repeated attempts to conjure how you would feel at the culmination of your desire, reality itself would theoretically start to bend to it. With this reasoning, future probability would start to favor what you truly believe to be real. When it is presented in this way it sounds like magical thinking, but if you stop to look at your own life you may start to see the parallels between your own beliefs and assumptions, and how they’ve tied in with life events. It’s especially easy to see how they tie in with negative ways of thinking, such as negative assumptions or feelings when it comes to someone’s own life, self-worth, job, etc.. all of which seem to slowly negatively impact those specific situations, which then start to line up with the preconceived belief thereby making it come true. The term "self-fulfilling prophecy" falls right into these lines.

Rarely does such manifestation come about quickly, but is a process over time. By applying beneficial beliefs and actions we can pull those future good probabilities towards ourselves, and conversely the same can be said for negative beliefs and actions. This is one of the reasons why most AP literature suggests that you only consume positive AP material, because if you only read out-of-body stories that scare you (many of which have dubious validity), then the seed would be planted and have a negative impact on your experience. Remember that thought, emotion, and belief can act on reality itself when out of body.

The Common Thread of All Techniques

If we break down some astral projection guides you’ll also start to see the base commonality in all of them. No guide will just state, for instance in a direct method, to just lay down and meditate and clear one’s mind, without mentioning any other steps. You can also say the same for indirect methods revolving around sleep. They’ll never just tell you to go to sleep and wake up early and fall back asleep, there’s always more, always some other steps that invigorate the mind and stir, especially, the subconscious to action.

For instance, with many lucid dreaming guides, there will be the mention of reality checks. A reality check is an action that confirms to yourself that you are in your physical “reality” or not. There’s a huge range of these checks, with some common ones including looking at your hands and counting how many fingers you have, looking at a clock to see if the time would even make sense, attempting to read something, and pulling your fingers to see if they stretch. In a lucid dream, and in astral projections as well, these will usually fail and make you question if you’re really in the physical reality. However for these checks to be effective the common instructions are to randomly do the checks repeatedly throughout the day while awake, and once you get used to it you’ll randomly start to do them while you’re asleep, triggering lucidity.

Setting intentions is another common entry in guides when it comes to astral projection. Intention is basically a plan or action that you intend to carry out; a purpose, or goal that you mean to do. Most guides mention setting intentions before you go to sleep, or before you meditate, either once or many times throughout the day. Your intention would be to go out of body, or could also include a goal to perform while out of body. Setting a mental intention multiple times throughout the day isn’t very different than randomly doing reality checks throughout the day, the root is the same.

The Monroe Institute has the Hemisync tapes which many people interested in the subject of astral projection may be familiar with. In it there are a series of tapes with guided meditations and binaural beats, instructions on how often to listen to them, and when to progress. They are more of a direct method, but it is still clearly a path of subconscious entertainment. The binaural beats in the tapes may put you into a brainwave state conducive to astral projection, however you still need to factor in the belief, desire, and repeated attempts of the person that is going through the tapes over and over in order to progress. To us, that is a stronger force than the beats themselves and necessary to be successful in this practice.

Another common suggestion when it comes to the practice of astral projection itself is the strong suggestion to keep attempting for multiple days, usually around a month at least. Over that period of time you hear people starting to have greater success. This is another form of repetition. We’re starting to see a pattern and a common thread when it comes to techniques and guides, much of which rely on a steady repetition of an action, way of thought, or practice. But why?

How Do We Command Our Subconscious?

As we have mentioned briefly, the main way to get through to your subconscious self is through repeated action or thought, over time. Over time a repeated action becomes a habit, it becomes a part of you. The same thing could be said of a thought or belief, over time even a small seed of a passing belief could turn into an entrenched core subconscious belief. None of us are exempt from this, it is happening to us constantly. However, much of the time it is subtle and we don’t notice because it happens slowly. A prime example is advertisers. When you’re constantly bombarded with ads, over time some may work and you may desire to try whatever it is that they’re selling, or believe that you want it. Humans have the amazing ability, and sometimes vulnerability, to get used to anything over time. How do we use this understanding when it comes to aligning our desire to AP with our subconscious?

There are a couple of simple ways to do this, much of which we go through in our Wake to Projection Blueprint and the Foundation Course, but the easiest ways are affirmative thoughts and simple rituals. By writing down some daily affirmations you can communicate with your subconscious over time and make it help you. These can be simple, absolute, and present tense statements, such as:

“I’m more than my physical body.”
“I keep my awareness when my body falls asleep.”
“It’s easy for me to astral project.”
“My higher self helps me.”
“I’m not afraid of the unknown.”
“I astral project tonight.”
“I accomplish my out-of-body goals.”
“I remember my entire experience.”

That’s just a small sample of some of the things you may want to affirm for yourself. Follow your gut intuition and write down whatever you think would help you, since that ties in with your belief and we know that belief is a mover for the subconscious. Dwell on the affirmations you made, memorize them, think of them when you fall asleep, and hold onto them until you lose consciousness. This alone can bring about spontaneous projections. Combining this with what you’ve learned in the Blueprint can put you well on your way to success. Even if you’re not doing the early morning wake-back-to-bed work, you can still easily find time to do nightly affirmations before you go to bed. They only take a few minutes.

Rituals are another gateway to our subconscious, and they can be habitual as well. We all do little rituals all the time usually to get a small hit of dopamine and feel temporarily good, like a habitual morning routine to “feel normal” before you start your day. You can put together any tiny ritual for your AP practice. Lighting a candle before bed when you affirm, saying a prayer, or any kind of physical action or routine. Make it something out of the ordinary, not something that would be a normal routine for you anyway, so that it gains more importance. Follow your instinct as well, the purpose is for this ritual to express the success you will have at going out of body tonight. Boil down most astral projection guides and you’ll find yourself face-to-face with rituals and repeated thoughts that both stimulate your subconscious into action and provide you with those windows of opportunity for success. You know the secret now, and although knowing the secret may take some of the magic out of it, it by no means lessens how magical you’ll feel when you apply them and eventually get out of your body. Be courageous, and consistent in your new habitual practice and you will be successful. Astral projection will become a part of who you are and universes beyond space and time will open up for you.
